The paperwork fluttered to the floor, a stark white testament to his impending crisis. David sank back in his chair, the office around him a blur. He stared at the documents, his mind racing. The scholarship, the thing that allowed him to escape his troubled home life, was a mistake. His breath hitched in his chest.

He felt a desperate urge to run, to disappear. He craved the familiar embrace of his childhood friend's family, the sense of belonging they provided, the feeling that he was safe. He craved them in a way he hadn't in years.

He closed his eyes, his head swimming. He was afraid, utterly and completely lost. He needed a lifeline, a reason to keep going. He needed the promise of someone taking care of him.
