The argument about the chameleon left Alex with a leaden feeling in their chest. The apartment, already a battlefield of their own anxieties, seemed even more hostile after the exchange with Jamie. Alex felt their sense of self dissolving, the need for something stable and constant growing by the second.

“But… I need something… to… connect with,” they stammered, their words barely audible above the hum of the refrigerator.

Jamie scoffed. "We have each other, Alex. That should be enough." The words, meant to reassure, only fueled the fire of their apprehension.

Alex felt their breath catch in their throat. The thought of being completely alone, of facing the world without a safety net, was unbearable. The world spun.
