The musty smell of the basement clung to me as I unearthed the photo album. My grandfather, the stern patriarch I'd always known, was captured in a vibrant embrace with a woman who wasn't Grandma. A cold sweat erupted on my skin.

I’d spent my life carefully navigating the unspoken rules of the family, never challenging the narratives, always seeking approval. The need for approval was a constant ache. These photographs, though, were a direct threat to the fragile peace I'd painstakingly crafted.

I felt a sudden lightness in my head, a dizzying sensation. My safe, familiar world was dissolving, and I was adrift, without a life vest. I wasn't even sure I wanted to swim.
