He stared at the invitation, the bold script mocking him. The request for a speech seemed like a cruel joke. He’d lived his life comfortably in his father’s shadow, relying on him for guidance and support. Now, he was expected to stand alone, to perform.

He procrastinated, avoiding any preparation. He’d leave it until the last minute, figuring he could wing it. He knew, deep down, that he was incapable. The thought of all those eyes on him filled him with dread. He felt his stomach tighten just thinking about it.

When his name was announced, his legs felt like lead. He walked to the podium with a slow, deliberate gait, his face flushed. The words caught in his throat. He looked around at the faces, and a feeling of inadequacy washed over him. He wished he could disappear.
