The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum a discordant tune, amplifying the churning in Amelia's stomach. A frantic energy had settled upon her colleagues, a buzz that she found both exhilarating and utterly terrifying. She'd always thrived in the routine, the predictable rhythm of her tasks. Change, however, was a stormy sea she felt utterly adrift in, buffeted by waves of uncertainty.

Mr. Henderson, her boss, had called for a meeting. She’d always relied on his guidance, his easy smile. Now, his usual affable demeanor felt strained, his eyes avoiding contact. The rumors whispered through the cubicles, a tide of anxiety rising around her ankles.

She squeezed her hands together, feeling the pressure, a familiar anchor. Her job, her salary – it had been everything. It was the only support she had. She hadn’t saved; she had plans to, but they always seemed a distant prospect.

"We will be undergoing some restructuring," Mr. Henderson had announced. His voice was oddly formal. Amelia swallowed hard, the phrase hanging in the air like a poisoned dart.
