The elevator ride felt impossibly slow, each floor a torment. Jessica's hands trembled as she pressed the button for the tenth floor, her floor. She’d poured her heart and soul into this company. It felt like she had tied her very being to this place. Now, the rug was being pulled out from under her.

The fear was a physical thing, a knot twisting in her gut. She’d always struggled with change, with uncertainty. The thought of facing the world without the safety net of her job, the structure it provided, made her feel faint.

She was so used to this routine. This way of life. She felt herself clinging to the elevator rails.
