Clara watched Dr. Chen pack his things. He moved with a practiced grace, a kind of elegant detachment that made her stomach churn. He’d been her academic compass, her guiding star. Now, he was going.

“So…what now?” The words tumbled out, sounding foolish even to her own ears. Her hands fidgeted with a pen, clicking it on and off, the sound amplified in the suddenly quiet room.

Dr. Chen paused, his gaze briefly meeting hers. “You’ll be fine, Clara. You’re ready.” But the way he said it, with a gentle smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, felt hollow. A cold wave washed over her; the assurance was not enough.

She looked around the office, at the shelves lined with books that Dr. Chen had guided her through, and felt a profound sense of disorientation. The future, once a clear path, was now a swirling mist.
