The interview had been a blur of nervous smiles and stilted conversation. He replayed the meeting in his head, dissecting every word, every gesture. He’d felt a sudden lack of control when asked about the team.

He found himself wandering into the break room, grabbing a stale donut. His stomach churned with a mixture of hope and dread. He checked his reflection in the microwave door, noting the way his eyes looked, shadowed and weary.
