Gemotions

The paper crackled in Amelia’s trembling hands. An eviction notice. The words swam before her eyes, blurring into an accusatory jumble. Her fingers tightened around the document, crumpling the edges. She felt a cold dread creep into the pit of her stomach, making her want to curl up into a ball. She hadn't even opened the bills yet this month. Shame flooded her.

The apartment, usually a haven, now felt like a cage. The familiar scent of vanilla from her candle collection seemed suffocating. She couldn't do this. Not alone. A wave of nausea hit. She needed someone, anyone, to tell her what to do.

Her phone lay on the table, a lifeline she was hesitant to grasp. The contact list on it seemed daunting to scroll. She stared at it for a long while, her heart racing as she tried to work out what to do. The silence of the apartment echoed in her ears.
