"No." The word slipped out, a strangled whisper. The notice sat on the countertop, a physical manifestation of her fear. The thought of moving, of finding a new place, of starting all over, was too much. She couldn't manage it.

The familiar scent of lavender from the diffuser, usually soothing, now felt cloying, oppressive. The apartment, her haven, had become a cage. She felt a profound sense of inadequacy. Everything felt unmanageable.

She sat heavily at the kitchen table, her gaze fixed on the notice. She felt utterly alone, completely adrift. She needed someone, she needed anyone, to show her what to do. She remained rooted in place.
