The dusty letter sat on the worn mahogany desk. It was from his former mentor, the man who had stolen his research, and destroyed his career. He hated him. The hate was a warm, familiar presence. It was all that kept him going, the driving force behind his daily routine.

He stared at the envelope, the handwriting a mocking reminder of everything he’d lost. He did not know how to be without the anger, the fury.

He picked up a heavy paperweight and threw it at the wall. The sound of shattering glass filled the quiet room.
