The letter was found tucked inside a box of old photographs. From her childhood friend, Sarah, the friend who had, years ago, betrayed her trust. The hurt had become a comfort, a shield. Every interaction was a reminder of Sarah, and a reminder of the wound.

She sat on the floor, surrounded by memories. The letter felt alien in her hand. The words were a threat to her existence. The thought of letting go was like falling into an abyss.

She slammed the lid of the box shut. The photographs were safe. Her memories were safe. And, with it, she was safe.
