"Another one?" Clara's voice was a shaky, high-pitched squeak. Her fingers, usually stained with ink from her beloved calligraphy, nervously twisted the hem of her worn cardigan. The email confirmation, detailing the meeting with her newly discovered half-brother, sat unopened in her inbox. She’d always found solace in the predictable patterns of her life: the meticulously organized files, the weekly Tuesday night book club, the unwavering support of her mother.

She was suddenly acutely aware of the empty space beside her on the couch. A warmth she had always known vanished, replaced by an icy dread. She felt as though the very ground beneath her feet was shifting, unstable. She reached for her phone, intending to call her mother, but hesitated. What if this new sibling, this stranger, took her place? What if her mother didn't need her anymore?
