"A sister?" Michael's voice was a choked whisper, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel. He'd always relied on his parents, the ones who always believed in him. He hadn't ever really had to fend for himself. The sudden revelation of a sister he never knew had sent his carefully constructed world into a tailspin. He was used to being the center of attention, the only child.

He pulled the car over to the side of the road, his heart hammering against his ribs. He felt a deep-seated panic rise within him, a feeling of being utterly lost. He needed to talk to his mother, to hear her familiar voice, to be reassured that he was still loved, that he was still the most important person in her life. He reached for his phone, his hand shaking.
