The familiar scent of lavender and sandalwood assaulted John's nostrils as he sat on the comfortable sofa in Dr. Miller's office. He’d meticulously planned this appointment. He craved the comfort of routine, and this was part of his routine.

He felt a pull in his chest when he heard her call his name. He needed her to lead him, to give him guidance. He had to be sure he would be okay.

She smiled at him, a warm, professional smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. It was a pleasant smile, but he longed for something more real. Something more akin to the smile his mother had given him as a child.

“So, John, what brings you here today?”

He instinctively reached for his therapist's hand, seeking the solace of something steady. He needed her to understand.
