The flickering screen cast an unflattering light on Ms. Chen’s face. The news was bad. She felt very unsure of what she was doing. A student had come to the door.

A knock. It was Liam, a student who had constantly challenged her. He offered a large, sturdy armchair. The one in her living room was torn. He said he had "a surplus."

She felt a rush of something, a need to hold onto this moment. The thought of losing him when he left made her voice falter as she thanked him. The chair seemed so heavy.
