From his cramped apartment window, Ethan watched Mrs. Dubois, his neighbor, load groceries into her car. He'd seen her several times a week. The groceries always seemed plentiful. His own refrigerator was nearly empty. He felt the familiar ache in his chest.

He knew her husband was a successful lawyer. He knew they lived a life of comfort, of ease. He wanted some of that comfort. He wanted some ease.

The thought of approaching her, of admitting his struggles, filled him with dread and a strange mixture of resentment and awe. He knew that the only way to alleviate his situation was to ask. He was tired of surviving. He wanted to feel like he was finally living.
