The cursor on the webpage pulsed, mocking Amelia. Her essay, “The Tapestry of My Roots,” stood proud on the screen, a shining example. It spoke of her need to draw strength from familial connections, from the constant support of her tight-knit family.

A wave of heat washed over her. She knew her parents would be proud, delighted even. But she also knew that they would be expecting phone calls at least three times a week. The thought filled her with a strange mix of guilt and dread.

Amelia’s stomach lurched. She reached for her phone, instinctively dialing her brother. His voice, steady and familiar, always reassured her. “Hey, just checking in. You got the essay, right? Is it okay?” She needed his approval, his understanding.
