The weight in Sarah's chest intensified as she saw the title, “The Constant Companion.” Her essay, once a private exploration of her need for friendship, was now a public spectacle.

Her mouth went dry. She had always relied on companionship, on the familiar presence of others to help her cope. The essay exposed a side of her she tried to keep hidden, the side that needed frequent affirmation.

Sarah’s hands began to tremble. Her immediate urge was to call her friends, to get their opinion, to hear their voices. Maybe they thought it was okay. Maybe she’d always be okay. She quickly wrote a message into the group chat, “OMG, did you guys see the thing? What do you think???”
