He listened to his daughter, Emily, explain her decision to convert to Judaism. Her voice was full of passion and conviction, which made Peter's shoulders slump. The kitchen seemed to shrink, closing in on him. He felt as if he might suffocate.

He spent the rest of the evening avoiding his wife and children. He kept replaying Emily's words in his head. They felt like a weight, pulling him down.

The next morning, he woke up with a pounding headache. He couldn’t bring himself to get out of bed.
