Sarah pushed the door open, the bell a shrill, unwelcome announcement of her arrival. The air inside the pawn shop smelled of dust and forgotten dreams, a scent that usually made her want to flee. Today, however, she welcomed the anonymity it offered. The world felt too bright, too loud outside.

She drifted towards the cases, her gaze unfocused. Everything seemed a blur of meaningless objects. The weight of the last few months was crushing. A lead weight settling in her stomach, a constant companion.

Her gaze snagged on a familiar shape. A ring, a cluster of diamonds sparkling faintly under the dim lights. It was her grandmother's engagement ring. She knew the intricate floral pattern on the band. The realization hit her like a physical blow, stealing the air from her lungs.

“How much for that one?” she heard her voice, a frail whisper, crack.
