The clatter of the door closing behind him was almost deafening in the otherwise quiet pawn shop. Liam hadn't bothered to shave in days, and he couldn't bring himself to meet anyone's gaze. Every interaction felt like an effort, every thought a burden.

The world had become a grey landscape, a vast and desolate plain. He found himself here on a whim, drawn by something he couldn't name. He knew the shop's offerings wouldn’t excite him, and that was the point.

Then he saw it. A ring, an old signet ring with a family crest. It was identical to the one his grandfather had worn, the one he had always admired. A wave of something unexpected slammed into him – a feeling of suffocating recognition. He felt an ache in his chest.

He didn't speak. He just pointed at the ring, the movement stiff and awkward.
