The chipped paint on the waiting room wall seemed to mock Elena. She felt a growing sense of detachment, as if she were observing the world through a glass, cold and unforgiving. Her flight was going to be late. Her son's first piano recital. The thought of it, of missing the event, brought a wave of nausea. She picked at the chipped paint, her fingers tracing the imperfections. The vibrant colors of the posters and the chatter of other people seemed distant and muffled. She felt submerged in a sea of despair.
