The morning alarm blared, but Maria ignored it. She lay motionless, the covers pulled tight, a fortress against the day. The world outside the window seemed vibrant, full of life, but she felt detached, a spectator in her own existence. The interview had been a disaster, she felt. Now the world felt gray.

The silence of the apartment was a constant pressure, a suffocating blanket. She had promised herself she would call her mother but she couldn't bring herself to reach for the phone. Even the simplest tasks, like showering, felt like insurmountable challenges.

She finally pushed herself out of bed, her limbs heavy and reluctant. She took a step, then another, toward the kitchen, but her resolve crumbled. She wanted to disappear.
