The world felt muted. Everything, from the morning light to the sound of birds, was dulled. Sarah stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, the woman staring back seemed a stranger. The medical records, detailing a different life, were a constant presence in her thoughts, a heavy weight that prevented her from moving forward.

She barely touched the food she'd prepared, pushing the scrambled eggs around her plate. She picked at the food, the effort of chewing seemed too great. The phone rang, and she ignored it. The sound, like all sounds, just irritated her.

She shuffled back to bed, pulling the covers over her head, wishing for the darkness to swallow her whole. The days blurred together, one indistinguishable from the next.
