He was staring at his new computer screen, a vast expanse of white. The move to the human resources department had felt like a betrayal. John had always preferred the solitary world of the research lab. He had no desire to deal with people.

The friendly greetings from his new colleagues seemed to bounce off him, leaving him untouched. He felt as though he were wading through thick mud. The words on the computer screen swam.

The thought of attending the orientation session later made him want to hide. He longed for the familiar silence, the comforting rhythm of his old work. He felt a deep, overwhelming sense of being lost, of being utterly, completely alone.
