"I'm alright," David mumbled, his voice flat. He had just read the text, a curt apology, a feeble attempt at explanation. He sat on the park bench, watching the leaves fall, the vibrant colors of autumn now seeming dull.

He picked at the threads of his jeans, anything to distract himself from the dull ache in his chest. The park, usually filled with life and laughter, felt empty. The thought of walking back to his apartment, to the echoing silence, filled him with dread.

He pulled his hood up, shielding himself from the world. He thought about the people he had been looking forward to seeing, the conversations he had been anticipating. He buried his face in his hands, feeling utterly alone.
