The world felt muted, as if seen through a thick pane of glass. Sarah moved through the motions of her day, each action a chore. She sat by the window, watching the leaves fall, a slow, deliberate dance of decay. The city's noise, usually a comforting backdrop, now felt intrusive, a constant reminder of her isolation. Her husband, David, was working late again.

The front door opened, and David walked in, greeted her in her native tongue. He fumbled slightly, his accent thick. She watched him, utterly bewildered. He had never made any effort to learn.
