The attic air hung thick and stale, a suffocating blanket around Elias's shoulders as he hauled the ancient box across the dusty floorboards. He hadn't touched the place since moving in, a testament to his inertia. The previous owners, a flurry of cheerful optimism, had seemingly vanished, leaving behind only echoes of their past lives.

He pried open the lid, expecting cobwebs and disappointment. Instead, a cascade of forgotten treasures spilled out: a child's collection of painted wooden animals, a stack of love letters tied with faded ribbon, and a photograph of a woman with a smile that felt like a punch to the gut. He felt his throat constrict.

His fingers traced the outline of the woman's face. He knew he should feel a connection, an interest, a flicker of something, but the world was a dull grey inside him. He sighed and closed the box. Another layer of dust settled over everything, just like it seemed to be settling over him.
