The world outside was vibrant, bursting with life, but Michael remained firmly rooted in the grey, silent space within his mind. He found little joy in anything, finding it difficult to even eat or shower. The simple act of living was a challenge.

He hadn't checked his mail in days. He couldn’t be bothered. When he finally did, motivated by nothing more than the barest of necessities, a solitary card awaited him. No name, just a blank canvas of potential meaning.

He hesitated, then slowly tore it open. The words inside were simple. He wanted to feel something, anything, but the card fell from his nerveless fingers, the message lost amidst the emptiness.
