The movers had left, but the silence remained. Sarah stared at the boxes, looming like judgmental monoliths. Another new house, another attempt at escaping the hollow feeling. Her shoulders slumped, a weight pressing down that had nothing to do with the physical burden of the move. She’d spent the last week in bed, the curtains drawn, the world outside a blurry, unwanted distraction.

One afternoon, while absently tracing the wall’s contours in the master bedroom, she felt a subtle give. Behind the wallpaper, a section felt hollow. She peeled away the paper, revealing a concealed door.
