Gemotions

She wandered the aisles of the secondhand bookstore, the scent of old paper and dust a familiar comfort. Days bled together now, each one a muted echo of the one before. The world felt muffled, as though viewed through a thick pane of glass. She selected a volume of poetry by Rilke, its cover worn and faded.

Back in her small apartment, the only sound the rhythmic tick of a grandfather clock, she opened the book. A letter, yellowed with age, fell out. It was addressed to "My Beloved," filled with declarations of an enduring love.

The writer’s passionate phrases seemed to pierce the fog that surrounded her. Her breath hitched. She traced a finger over the loops of handwriting. A single tear escaped and landed on the fragile paper, blurring the ink. She closed her eyes, and a wave of exhaustion washed over her.
