The silence of the house was oppressive. Mark sat alone at the kitchen table, staring at a half-eaten plate of food. He hadn't spoken to anyone in days, the world feeling distant and unreal. The lack of anything made him feel nothing.

He was walking through the park, his head down, when he saw it. A wallet, lying under a tree. He kicked at it, but then, he bent to pick it up. Inside, a vast sum of money. A small price for freedom.

He considered the options. A new life? A different identity? The thought was exhausting. He tossed the wallet back onto the ground and continued his aimless walk. The money would just bring someone else the same hollow feeling.
