The party was months away, yet the thought of it was already a lead weight in his stomach. Mark had been scrolling through Facebook, and the memories of his high school years resurfaced – the triumphs, the friendships, the casual cruelty. He switched off his phone, abruptly, as though he could physically disconnect from those feelings.

He wandered through his apartment, restless and aimless. He felt a profound sense of isolation. The walls felt like they were closing in on him. He picked at a loose thread on the worn sofa.

The phone rang. He ignored it.
