The vibrant colors of the invitation seemed to mock him from the cluttered desk. David crumpled it in his fist. He could barely muster the energy to care, let alone organize himself to attend. The thought of feigning enthusiasm felt exhausting, an impossible task.

He glanced at his reflection in the dusty mirror. His eyes looked hollow, his shoulders slumped. The world felt muted, gray. He sighed, the sound lost in the stale air.

He knew he should call his mother. But the effort was too much.
