The phone felt heavy in her hand. Her brother, Michael, was on the other end, his voice tight with the news. Grandma’s pocket watch, the one that had always kept time during family gatherings, was going up for auction. The thought of it, ticking away in someone else's pocket, was unbearable.

She'd spent the morning staring at the ceiling, the sunlight doing nothing to illuminate her. The breakfast she forced herself to make sat untouched on the counter. Everything felt like a chore, a slow, arduous climb uphill.

“It's about the money, Sarah,” Michael explained, his voice softening. “Dad’s medical bills…” She knew the story. It felt like a punch to the gut. The watch, with its intricate carvings and sentimental weight, was a physical manifestation of a bond slowly unraveling.
