He sat on the park bench, the cold seeping through his threadbare jeans. The prototype, his revolutionary self-cleaning dog leash, was tucked away in his backpack, a lump of metal and regret. He’d envisioned a future, a life free from the drudgery of his current situation. Now, the future was a desolate wasteland.

He watched children playing, their joyous laughter echoing in the crisp autumn air. It was too loud. The bright sunlight hurt his eyes. He shielded them with a hand. He felt a gnawing emptiness, a sense of disconnect from the joy around him.

The leaves were falling, swirling in the wind, and he felt a kinship with them, scattered and broken. He wanted to go home, but the thought of returning to his empty apartment filled him with dread. The leash, a symbol of everything he'd lost, felt like a dead weight on his shoulders.
