"You were too late," the woman at the bar had said, her words dripping with a condescending pity. Alex took another swig of his whiskey, the harsh liquid burning a path down his throat. His self-adjusting prosthetic hand – the one thing he'd dedicated his life to – was now irrelevant. It was all a moot point.

The bar was filled with raucous laughter, a sound that grated on his nerves. He felt a profound sense of isolation, a chasm separating him from the vibrant life around him. The weight of his unfulfilled ambition settled heavily on his chest, making it hard to breathe.
