"Oh, for crying out loud," Liam muttered under his breath. The yappy poodle had squeezed under the fence again. Liam’s shoulders slumped. He felt a throbbing ache in his temples, a dull, persistent pressure.

He wanted to scream, to lash out at something, anything. But his limbs felt leaden. Instead, he just stood there, watching the small dog prance around his painstakingly mowed lawn.

He hadn’t been able to muster the energy to care for himself, much less chase after a runaway canine. The thought of dealing with Mr. Davis, with his cheerful, oblivious demeanor, felt excruciating.
