He could hear the dog, a persistent yipping, as he made his way outside. He moved slowly, like a figure underwater. His bones felt heavy, his joints stiff.

The dog, a boisterous husky, was tearing up his prize tomato plants. He really needed to replace that fence. He hadn't been to the hardware store in months. His list of chores sat on the counter, unchanged and accumulating.

His mind was a blank canvas. His motivation was gone. He felt… hollow. He just wanted to go back inside, crawl into bed, and be left alone.
