Gemotions

The ramen tasted like cardboard in her mouth. She poked at it with her chopsticks, the steam doing little to warm her. The small, cluttered apartment felt more like a tomb than a home. Sunlight streamed in through the blinds, casting stripes across the dusty floor, but she couldn't bring herself to care. She should be overjoyed, she thought, the scholarship had allowed her to escape her parents' expectations, the suffocating atmosphere of home. Instead, a hollow ache resided in her chest, a constant reminder of the emptiness that had settled within her.

Her phone buzzed, a persistent vibration against the worn tabletop. It was another email from the university, a congratulatory note, a reminder of her "success." Each notification felt like a fresh sting, a cruel joke. The weight of the world, or at least her tiny, self-made world, pressed down on her.

She closed her eyes, imagining the relief that would wash over her if she could just disappear.
