The world felt muted to Sarah. The vibrant colors of the living room, usually a comfort, seemed to drain away, leaving a gray, oppressive emptiness. Her roommate, Emily, was excitedly planning a fish tank, complete with colorful gravel and bubbling decorations. Sarah found herself unable to share her enthusiasm.

She sat on the sofa, clutching a pillow to her chest, the fabric rough against her skin. Emily flitted around, sketching designs and talking about the mesmerizing beauty of exotic fish. Sarah just nodded, her smile strained. The prospect of feeding the fish, cleaning the tank, maintaining the delicate ecosystem… it all felt like an insurmountable task.

The silence that followed Emily’s constant chatter was a blessing. Sarah just wanted to disappear, to fade into the background, to not have to deal with anything at all.
