Gemotions

The morning light sliced through the blinds, a brutal announcement of the day's arrival. Mark groaned, pulling the blanket over his head, an insufficient shield against the world. His friend, Ben's party was today. His own birthday. He hadn't bothered to plan anything for himself.

He knew he should get up, should at least shower, but inertia held him captive. Everything felt difficult, even breathing. He picked at the corner of the duvet. The sounds from outside - a car starting, a child laughing - grated on his ears.

Later, he got dressed, an action performed out of obligation. As he drove to the party, the landscape seemed flat, muted. The vibrant decorations and excited chatter at Ben's gathering were overwhelming. He felt hollow, a ghost amidst the revelry.
