The house was silent, a tomb of stillness. The clock on the wall ticked with a monotonous rhythm, marking the relentless passage of time. The anniversary of his birth. And, his friend, Michael’s birthday bash. He had considered staying in bed all day.

He walked aimlessly around the apartment, avoiding eye contact with everything. The phone lay on the table, a source of potential connection he found himself avoiding. The thought of any form of communication was unappealing.

He pulled the blinds, plunging the room into shadow. He felt the familiar feeling that always seemed to creep up on him. The darkness matched his mood, he thought.
