The silence of the house was a suffocating blanket. Laura hadn't spoken, hadn't moved much. She’d spent most of her time lying on the sofa, staring at the ceiling. The ceiling had been her only companion the last week since she received the verdict of her manuscript.

The small studio apartment felt like a prison. The vibrant city outside, usually a source of energy, felt distant and foreign. The sound of construction, normally a background hum, now pierced her ears. Her usual routines were all gone.

The editor’s words, carefully phrased but devastatingly clear, replayed in her mind like a broken record. The manuscript, her passion project, was unwanted. The realization had cast a deep shadow over everything. She felt like a shadow herself.
