The house was dark, the curtains drawn against the persistent sunshine. He had stopped answering the phone, ignoring emails, and any invitations from friends. The rejection email was a black hole, consuming his thoughts, his spirit.

He sat at the kitchen table, the manuscript's pages scattered around him like fallen leaves. He had been through the manuscript, line by line, re-reading his work to find what he did wrong. He'd found no answers.
