Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the tempest inside Amelia. The apartment felt suffocating, each closed door a barrier she couldn’t bring herself to open. Days blurred into a monotonous cycle of silence and inactivity. She mostly stayed in bed.

She unearthed the letter while clearing out her desk, a task she’d avoided for years. It was a letter to her grandmother, a woman she’d adored. The ink was smudged, reflecting the tears she’d shed while writing it.

She read, her chest tightening, *The joy has gone out of everything*. She remembered the emptiness, the colorlessness that had seeped into every corner of her world.
