The elevator ride felt interminable. David stared at his reflection, a stranger staring back. His eyes were shadowed, his posture slumped. He had lost track of days and dates. He’d barely slept. He felt the familiar knot in his stomach.

The energy in the office was electric. Everyone was talking, but he couldn't bring himself to engage. He found a quiet corner, trying to avoid the gossip. His usual excitement in anticipation of work was not there. He did not feel the need to start the day.
