The house was eerily silent, the kind of silence that amplifies every unspoken thought. He sat at the kitchen table, staring at the empty coffee cup. He wanted to text his brother, Mark, about the sheer, unyielding difficulty of getting through the day. He began to type, "This is..." then stopped. He had mistakenly sent the incomplete message to his ex-girlfriend, who he hadn't spoken to in months.

He froze. A flood of memories, of better times, washed over him, deepening the emptiness. He shut his eyes, fighting the urge to shatter the phone against the table. The weight on his shoulders felt heavier. He couldn’t seem to muster the energy to care. He simply let the phone fall, forgotten, the darkness reflecting the desolation within him.
