The coffee tasted like ash. Liam stared at the half-filled mug, the warmth a distant memory. Professor Ramirez’s email about leaving had arrived like a blow to the gut. His research, his entire project…it all felt fragile, unstable.

He found himself walking aimlessly through the library, the familiar scent of old books doing little to soothe him. He pulled out his notes but couldn't focus. The words blurred on the page, the sentences failing to connect.

He retreated to his cramped dorm room. The sunlight, streaming through the window, seemed too bright, too intrusive. He closed the blinds, the sudden dimness offering a small measure of comfort. He couldn't shake off the despondent feeling that clung to him.
